Our final SAIL meeting of the year featured Dr. Linda Carney, MD, as our guest presenter. The topic was food, and its impact on academics and athletics, skin and mind. In addition to discussing aspects of healthful eating, learning about studies on the impact of various foods on our moods, behavior and bodies, and seeing examples of the changes in lives based on changes in diets, we were also treated to a vegan no-oil low-salt feast, complete with appetizers, the main course and desert (always popular). The presentation opened up new ways of looking at our diet as more than just something tasty or an issue of weight, and instead highlighted the wonderful complexity of our God-designed body machines and the numerous ways what we eat truly does shape what we are. We would like to that Dr. Carney for her time and effort in bringing us this information (and dinner!). |

March 4: Junior Unit Service Project - The Junior Pathfinder unit has a service project this Sunday, March 4. We will be doing some yard work for an elderly couple who need some help. Please bring gloves if you have them. We will be raking pine straw and moving dead limbs. We will leave from the church at 9:30 a.m. and plan to be back by 3:00 p.m. You will each need to bring a sack lunch and a water bottle. For additional information, please contact Miss Cathy.
March 7, March 21: SAIL Pathfinder Club meetings - We will begin preparation for the Texas Camporee. If you have been working on any honors, please bring all material completed (butterfly identification, shell collections, written work from the Honor Fair, origami, etc). Also please check that you have all the proper elements of your Class A (Full Dress) Uniform - INCLUDING black socks! We will need to put in an order for badges and uniform parts soon. Senior Unit, remember to bring back your borrowed backpacks and the tents on the 7th. March 11 (Tentative activity): CTX Practice session for Texas Camporee. April 5-8: Texas Conference Pathfinder Camporee at Lake Whitney Ranch - This year’s theme is “Here I Am.” You can find additional information about the events and if you need one, a letter of excused absence or early release from school on the CTX Pathfinder website or at the Texas Conference website. We will be registering as a club (please do not attempt to register yourself on the website), and will need a final headcount by March 11. The fee per SAIL Pathfinder and staff is $25. NOTE: If you have not been regularly attending the SAIL Pathfinder club meetings, you will NOT be allowed to participate in the Camporee, as per the SAIL Pathfinder Handbook. If you are unsure of your status, please contact Mr. Baker or Miss Cathy. At this week's meeting, we will be finishing preparation for the Pedernales Falls SP campout. The river was still high this past weekend - moving a bit too fast to cross. But the spring birds are moving through, and the damp ground provides a good opportunity for finding and identifying animal tracks. Senior unit, remember to bring your packed packs to the Wednesday meeting - if you do not have a pack yet, we will have extra ones Wednesday, so bring your gear and pack at the meeting. Also, take some time to review the requirements for the Backpacking honor, and be ready to ask questions about skills and knowledge you need to review. Keep your packs light! For the Junior unit, we will be learning a bit about ways to measure distance and height in the field, and part of that will be measuring ourselves. Did you know that with a few triangles you can determine the width of the river, or the height of a tree? We are also preparing for some tracking. That includes marking trails and reading trail markers, and identifying the marks left by animals. You can see additional information from the TPWD on Texas animal tracks and making casts of animal tracks. |
